Antique Shops

I've been wondering this for years now, and have intended to write about it for some time as well... so today is the day.

Antique Shops. Why do they feel the need to put half of their inventory out on the sidewalk? Do antique shop owners think we will not see their store? Do they enjoy piling crap onto the street, only to pull it back in at the end of the day? Does it actually help with their sales? Other stores don't put their things out...yet we still shop there. Should other stores starting putting their items out on the sidewalk to be more visible? You tell me.

Also, if anyone knows the real reason why Catholic's don't eat meat on Fridays during lent, I'd really like to know. I'd like to know why fish isn't considered meat as well. (religious opinions of why this happens are fine too... but I'd also like to know the historical reason).

thanks,
asha.

The Human Race

No, not the real human race.... but a running race (on Summit Ave) called the Human Race. It took place last Sunday (03.28.2010), and since I haven't taken many pictures lately, I decided I would hit it up. Here are some of my favorite photos from the event.

I would like to note, that I am really lucky to have some FAST friends. I went mostly to take pictures of them, and it was a bit chilly (as a spectator), so as soon as I got the photos I needed, I headed home.

Ariella, my scrabble buddy. 3rd woman finisher!

Erin, my high school XC coach. 5th place woman.

jamie, who is gonna get me a job at run n fun. 8th place woman.

bekah, one of the infamous yetzer runners! 24th woman.

angie. doctor/runner. 25th woman.

ed rousseau. not my friend, yet. will be soon, i hope. 70 years old. 8K time: 39:54. Pace: 8:01 per mile.

more photos will be posted on photography by asha later today.

missing (him)

I went to the NCAA (women's) frozen four championship last weekend. Duluth was playing Cornell. At first, I decided to cheer for Duluth, because I'd like to see a Minnesota team win. Not long after this decision was made, I changed my mind, because Cornell was undoubtedly outplaying the Bulldogs.

There was a man, an old man, cheering for the Big Red (Cornell). He reminded me a lot of my grampa, in that he was just this cute old man, with a sign (that read "Go Big Red"), and he'd stand up and cheer and sit down and cheer. He was so sweet, and it reminded me of when my gramma and grampa used to come to my hockey games, and cheer me on.

I've been missing my grampa like mad the last few days, and last night, when I was in bed, I realized that seeing this old dude at the hockey game is what brought back all these (positive) memories of my grampa.

I'm close to tears as I write this, and have been close to tears several times the last few days. I don't know if what I'm feeling is grief, or if it's just loneliness. I guess I don't care what it's called. I just miss my grampa. I miss him coming to my hockey games, and cheering me on, just like the old dude did this weekend. I miss watching football games with him. Fishing season is just around the corner, and I already miss fishing with him.

I'm wearing his old pajama shirt right now, I slept in it last night. It's striped, and made of worn out cotton. There is a blue pocket that was sewn on it (likely by my gramma). After my grampa died, I took a bunch of his clothes. I remember there were tissues and cough drops in all the pockets of his jammy shirts.

I know these feelings of sadness and loneliness will pass. They always do. And really, it's not so bad to miss him. I'm just reminded of all the fun we had, and all the love we had, and all the love I still do have for him. It's a pleasant reminder, even though it makes me cry sometimes.

Celebration of winter

I almost forgot....well I did forget (to mention it in my last post).

I had the 3rd or 4th Annual Celebration of Winter on Sunday Feb 21. It was a food/clothing drive for "Sharing Korner" 595 Arundel Street, saint paul, mn 55103.

We raised 96 lbs of food and clothes that night. I would like to thank everyone who came (especially my mom, because she brought a cake). I would also like to thank costellos for having incentives (i.e. donate food, get drink discounts).

I had a great time, and I hope everyone who came had fun too.

If you would like to donate food/clothes in the future, I recommend Sharing Korner. They serve the frogtown neighborhood in St Paul. They are located across the street from Jackson Elementary. The phone number there is 651.293.1931. Also, if you are looking to receive food/clothing, give them a call, and they can hook you up (either with the stuff they have, or they will give you a number to call, for a food shelf that serves your area.

You can also call 211, which is the United Way, and they can help you find food shelf information, as well as lots of other "need to know" things (i.e. doctors, housing assistance, etc).

Thanks again everyone who supported/attended the Celebration of Winter this year. I thought it was a great success.

Lately....

Here's a list of things, that I've experienced in the last couple of weeks, in no particular order.

1. I was sick for 2.5 weeks. It was awful. Mentally, I felt okay....physically, I felt like shit. After about 1.5 weeks, I started getting really annoyed/frustrated, because I couldn't do much.
(update: I am FINALLY feeling better. I haven't puked in a few days).

2. Three (1.2.3) people budged in front of me at the pharmacy at target yesterday. All three were adults. They must have went to half-day kindergarden, and missed the lesson(s) about budging in line. Dummy's.

3. The olympics have been taking place the last 2 weeks. Never am I more "anti-american" that during the olympics (and sometimes during the world cup). America runs (or tries to run) damn near everything in the world.... but they are not the best, which is why I cheer for everyone else during the big O.
(note: things like soccer championships should be won by brazil, hockey games-- canada, women's gymnastics-- romania). Let the U.S. win in other things, like eating contests. p.s. as far as "anti-american" goes.... I am still happy (for the most part) to be here, in this land paved with golden streets.... so don't go reading too much into this "anti-american" and put me on the "no fly list". My anti-american sentiment is pretty much just for international sports competitions.

4. Is it sad that I feel the need to write a disclaimer about that?

5. My apartment is a mess, as is my schoolwork. Being sick for a couple of weeks has not helped.

6. I got window-washing fluid for my car yesterday, and I can finally see out of the windshield!

7. Salmon was 4 dollars at target the other day. Koby and I got into an "argument" about it.... she says something about my kids will have to pay for it later. Whatever. I ate some of it yesterday (with green beans and basmati rice), and it was good. Eat that koby :)

8. I have a couple of competitive friends, with whom I play scrabble. Donna and Ariella, thanks for keeping me on my toes! P.S. I think the "V" should be worth more than 4. Does anyone agree? It's such a hard letter (and there are no 2 letter V words).

9. Toki came over a couple weeks ago, played a bunch of records, and didn't put them back in their cases. This will be an afternoon long activity, which I am fine with, cuz then I can look through (and play) some dusty albums.

10. My former advisor (and current friend) Greg fell a week or two ago, and shattered his knee cap. Feel better buddy!!

11. The women's canadian hockey team beat the US for the gold medal. I was okay with this. The canadian team also got in some trouble for drinking beers/champagne and smoking cigars (on the ice) after their victory. I am okay with this too. Sure, it doesn't set a great example for the children... but who cares? I love canada, and I guess in my mind, they deserve a stack of "get outta jail free cards", cuz they are so politically chill about things (i.e. they don't start wars for the hell of it).

12. Women's curling was won by Sweden. A lady on their team looks kind of like my therapy lady. It cracks me up. Oh...the Swedes beat canada for that title...and one of the canadian ladies looked like Sarah Palin (kind of.... just with long brown hair, shapely eyebrows, and the general "milf" look about her).

13. I decided I should be a curler. I live super close to the st paul curling club. And it looks dope. I like the shoes they wear too. (jesus, really? the shoes? there's more to curling than the shoes). Anyhow, I think I will be hitting up the curling club in the future.

14. Today (from 6:30-7:30 MN time) is a sale at Vertical Endeavors (VE). It's a one year pass to rock climb for 298 dollars (+ tax). I've thought about doing it, but then I would have to drop my Y membership....because all I ever do at the Y is run, and there is a treadmill at VE. But...because the Y is super close to me, I feel like I should keep my membership there and just pay the drop in fee to rock climb. We'll see. I've got 7 hours to decide. :)

15. I bought an iPhone on wednesday from stephanie, for 50 bucks. I tried to unlock/jailbreak it, but messed up on a few things. If anyone wants to try their luck at it, hit me up. I may give it one more shot later today...we'll see, otherwise, I'll bring it in to world of wireless tomorrow or later in the week.

16. Heiruspecs played a fundraiser show (at central high school), for their scholarship program, which supports students after high school in studying the arts. I arrived to the show a bit late, but I will say, it was super dope to see all these former central alum playing music together, and it seemed like they raised quite a bit of money as well!

I am

I am five foot seven, a buck fifteen drippin wet.
but there's more to me than bones.
I am a body covered in scars, some accidental, some not.
I am a victim, of violence, racism, and occasionally my own mind.
I am a victor of hockey games, tennis meets, and dean's list,
none of which matters much, to me, or you.
I am a learner, educator, ex-lover, and my mother's second favorite child.
I am a has-been runner, a will be graduate, and maybe a runner once more.
I am followed, harassed, asked, and pestered daily...by your "average american".
I am the little kid who never stayed awake late enough to see santa eat my homemade cookies.
I am significantly below the poverty line, I can limbo it without bending my knees or arching my back.
I am not who you think I am, nor what I want to be.
I am an imperfect perfectionist, who will always live life as a work of progress.
